A lifetime of learning what traditional education left out

Paul Smith left home at seventeen with £170 to his name. He trained as an engineer, completed an apprenticeship at Ford and built a career in industry, while quietly investing in property on the side.

That first step became a lifelong education in how wealth is created, protected and passed on.

More than four decades later, Paul is an entrepreneur, investor, educator and author working internationally from Monaco.

From £170 to his first investment

Leaving home at seventeen forced Paul to become independent early. Engineering gave him a practical foundation: understand how things work, solve problems systematically and take responsibility for the result. His apprenticeship at Ford and later career in industry developed that mindset further.

But employment was not the whole plan. Paul wanted to create assets alongside his income. In 1982, while still a teenager, he bought his first property. He lived in it, improved it, sold it and repeated the process. It was not presented to him as a curriculum. He learned by doing, adapting and doing it again.

By twenty-eight, Paul was a millionaire. The milestone mattered, but the education behind it mattered more. He had discovered that income and wealth were not the same thing and that practical knowledge could change the choices available to him.

“Property was my first university.
The Art of Wealth became the curriculum.”

Property was the beginning — not the boundary

Paul spent decades building experience in property before teaching anybody else about it. It gave him capital, confidence and a deep understanding of how assets can be created through knowledge and action. But it also led to a wider question: what should happen after wealth has been created?

Over time, Paul broadened his focus across businesses, markets and other asset classes. After moving to Monaco, that evolution accelerated. He became increasingly interested not only in where capital could be placed, but in how different assets work together, how concentration creates vulnerability and how wealth can be structured.

The result is a more complete view of prosperity. Learn and earn. Create and compound. Protect what has been built. Then prepare people and structures for transfer. Property remains part of Paul's story, but the Art of Wealth Institute is deliberately about the whole journey.

Knowledge creates better choices

Paul's central belief is straightforward: risk grows when people do not understand what they are doing. That does not mean every decision becomes simple or every outcome becomes certain. It means knowledge gives people a stronger basis for asking questions, weighing trade-offs and deciding which risks they are prepared to take.

Traditional routes often encourage people to hand over responsibility without fully understanding where their money sits or how their future depends on it. Professional advice can be valuable, but advice is more useful when the person receiving it has enough education to participate in the conversation.

That is the role Paul sees for the Institute: not to replace advisers or make decisions for members, but to help people build the understanding required to engage with their own wealth more actively and intelligently.

To teach what they had to learn for themselves

Over more than forty years, Paul and Aniko came to the same realization again and again: the knowledge they needed to become financially independent, invest beyond one route, operate internationally, protect what they had built and think about future generations was not taught in one place.

They learned through experience, research, advisers, mistakes, conversations and exposure to people operating at different levels of wealth. The Art of Wealth Institute is their attempt to bring that wider education together and make it available through an institution that can keep evolving.

It is not intended to be a monument to Paul. His role is to be the Institute's first steward: to share what he is learning, bring useful people and ideas into the conversation and help establish standards that can outlast any one individual.

Wealth that creates choice,
stability and impact.

Paul's ambition for the Institute is to help create, recognize and support one million millionaires worldwide. The number matters because of what greater capability can make possible: stronger families, more resilient communities, new businesses, local investment and more people able to support meaningful problems with time and capital.

The goal is not wealth for status. It is wealth used with judgment. The Institute's Lift One principle asks each member to help at least one other person move forward in wealth, opportunity, capability or freedom. It turns a global target into a practical personal commitment.

It's not a course. It's an institution.

It's a recognition that the more capable, informed and financially secure people we create, the more problems we have the power to solve.

I'm deeply grateful to Paul and Aniko for the guidance and the faith they helped us find in ourselves. But it's the love at the heart of their teaching that changed things for us - they opened our eyes to a new world of possibilities and welcomed us into a community that truly cares. They've shown us that financial freedom is much richer when it's built on collaboration, community, and heart.

The next chapter is the whole of wealth.

Property began Paul's journey. Experience broadened it. The Art of Wealth Institute is where those lessons come together—so more people can create wealth, protect it, transfer it and use it with purpose.
